Type Studio (from Free Technology 4 Teachers - Richard Byrne)

This online video editing tool offers very different features than that of a tool discussed in a previous post of mine, screencastify. With Type Studio, it looks like you can't make videos (at least with the free version) but you can upload a video to edit. What separates this tool from others is that it creates a transcript for your video and allows you to edit the text if need be. With the transcript, you can simply delete the words you want and it will take that portion of the video out. Instead of trying to navigate a timeline and get the exact moment perfectly, just highlight the words and delete. Also, another nice feature is that you can add subtitles to your video which are automatically created for their software.

I am a creature of habit and will likely continue using screencastify for most of my video lesson making instead of creating an extra step of uploading the video to Type Studio. I'm not sure of its compatibility with videos made with screencastify. I tried uploading a lesson I made and was given the error message that it wasn't the right kind of video format. One application that I think this could be used for is for students to create a video to demonstrate their learning on something. Teachers could then use the transcript to go back and make sure students addressed all required components from the rubric. I'm sure there are other creative applications for this tool.

  1. I think this would be a great tool to use to create engaging videos for your students. This could allow educators to have fun visuals, texts, or colors that draw students' attention toward certain words, images, or information. Visually appealing videos could be very beneficial for student learning!

  2. I like that this tool you discuss creates subtitles for your videos. My school has a high population of English Language Learners and this could be very beneficial for them when we I am creating video lessons.

    1. I have not checked that out yet. Is it a video editing or recording tool?
